Fight or Fight
04:01
|
|

I was estranged from myself
I worked so hard in a body just to settle down
And I came from the border to find nobody else
I want you, not some stranger from a cell
And I know you don't want my help,
But I'm open
Western waves, and California gold
I took a train, a bus, a boat, and my worn out souls
And I am brave, but in a minute I could be pushed back home
My papers, my wallet all stolen
My love, my labor and my soul
Do they mean nothing?
Suits and chiefs, and highway patrol
I was ten miles away when they pulled me over
They took my body and left me with nothing but dirt
But my soul is raked into this earth
My sister, my mother and my birth
My country, my family and mirth
My mind, my freedom and my worth
Cannot be broken
My mind, my freedom and my worth
Cannot be broken

Ones to Make It
03:45

|

I sat on my couch just looking out
As my neighbors gazed from afar
The windows showed signs of a life lived alone
But not that hard
I putzted about my day throwing leaflets away
Tryin' to clear a little space inside my room
Tryin' to clear a little space inside my mind
For whatever it consumes
But waiting on the good time's as stale as it seems
Sitting on a dead stump, trying to grow my dreams
Life doesn't work like in the movies
And gas prices are steep, and last night I couldn't sleep
'Cause I spent all our money on the rent
And I said something to you that was true, and I wish it wasn't
The sun goes down and the lights come on
I pick up my drink and dance across the yard
Life is easy but living's hard
Well this town used to be cheap
And I never want to sleep
Not sure I'm happy anymore
But I'm pushing at these edges and finding what this life is for
Break your ambitions from their box
Lend 'em to the lonely and the vacant
Let nothing stop you at all
We're going to be the ones to make it

Present Tense
04:53
|
|
||
Well, I was texting and driving at the same time
This modern way of sinning keeps eating my mind
And I don't own a horse, I'm desensitized
I drive with my windows down and the AC high
Hey Mr. BMW
You left your lights on and I don't know what to do
And I know Bruce wrote a song or two
About the luxury of cars but he can have it cause it's overused
So how did we get here?
This sad stolen story
Where everybody's just quiet in their cars?
How did we get here?
This sad stolen story
Where we all know who's running for president
But no one seems to live in present tense
Well, the nostalgics had it right when they first had a plan
To seize the rustic day and make a poem from a man
But we all want to fight, and we all want to win
We all want a reason to start over again
So how did we get here?
This sad stolen story
Where everybody's just quiet in their cars?
How did we get here?
This sad stolen story
Where we all know who's running for president
But they don't seem to live in present tense
We're on the brink of world war three
The radio's convinced us it's overseas
But there's a gun shot in our school yard
Oh, what times are these?
When a drop of water is a crime
We're all holding our breath and staying afloat at the same time
You need a bite, and I need a drink
Can we spare a dime?
So how did we get here this sad stolen story
Where everybody's just quiet in their cars?
Oh how did we get here this sad, stolen story?
Where we only really care who's president
And no one heard what these words meant
I can't seem to live in present tense...

New Wheels
03:37
|
|

Room eyes of those who reconcile
They don't know where they're from
They don't know what they've done
But I got these new wheels that take bad feelings away
I don't know what where I'm from
I don't know what I've done
Regrets just another walk in the park
You gotta sit it down, you gotta have a talk
And when your'e ready to move on
Pack your things well
Label the breakables and this-sides up
Ooh, ooh, and roll bad feelings away
And when you're gone
I'll never be the same
But if you stay, honey I'll never change
And if I grow
It won't be like a tree
I'm too young to stay filthy, but too old to get clean
And when you're gone
I'll never be the same
But if you stay, honey I'll never change
And if I grow
It won't be like a tree
I'm too young to stay filthy, but too old to get clean
Room eyes of those who reconcile
They don't know where they're from
They don't know what they've done
But I got these new wheels that take bad feelings away
I don't know what where I'm from
I don't know what I've done

All New, All Old
04:10
|
|
||
You start at the bottom like the new kid in town
You got your new kicks, but your mouth don't make a sound
There's people you don't know and some you'd like to meet
How do you wade through the shit like 'smile, nice to see ya'
And how do you know that it's not what it seems
It feels good inside, but you're running on empty...
It's all new, it's all old
Too many jokes retold and lines unspoken
It's all new, it's all old
How do you find out how beginnings go
Well, you start from scratch like a seamstress on the job
You gotta know what you want before you put it on
And if it don't fit, let it go, don't let it stay
Better to be undressed
Than stuck in your old, damn ways
It's all new, it's all old
Too many jokes retold and lines unspoken
It's all new, it's all old
How do you find out how beginnings go
Sometimes you feel like you've got the right plan
You're gonna get a new job when you move to Portland
But it's as hard as it looks, it's as tough as it seems
Man, I've been here too long, I'm gonna move to Berlin
It's all new, it's all old
Too many jokes retold and lines unspoken
It's all new, it's all old
It's all new, it's all old
It's all new, it's all old
How do you find out how beginnings go

The Wasp
05:38
|
|

I am the was stuck between these panes of glass
Waiting for one to move, or the other
The world outside's so clear and beckoning
Just can't seem to make it through this fiber
Just can't seem to make it through
When the day calls me to early rising
I haven't slept at all
The nights, the dreams, the hopeful shadows in between
Reminding me of what I lost last fall
I am the wasp stuck between these panes of glass
I've no idea how I got here
With measured time, strict days and a schedule
I never once thought of fear
I never once thought of fear
But when the day calls me to early rising
I haven't slept at all
The stamps, the postcards, your absence weighing hard
Your shoulder print still stained on my back wall
When the day calls me to early rising
I haven't slept at all
The nights, the dreams, the hopeful shadows in between
Your crumpled clothes on my bedroom floor
The fading lights, photos in black and white
The one of you leaning out the back door

The Way You Want
06:37
|
|||
I got hit somewhere in a parking lot
When I told you you said is that all you got
I guess love is about who's story you believe
And then I found my soul in a wristwatch
On Isaak's arm in a bookshop
I know love is about who you choose to believe in
Well I'll drive all over this state
Taking missteps back to old mistakes
I fucking hope that I can fix what you can't even face
Back to the basements, back to the bedrooms
Back to the midnight walks and the bad excuse
Back when my friends and I we were fierce, happy and free
But I'm a woman with a minor refuge
So take me in or cut me loose
And every woman that you've scarred
Will haunt you like the ghost that you are
Never able to lay down in your grave
Cause there's no peace to be had
By the sorry one who is too sad
To take the right step, to be brave
And I'm a woman with a minor refuge
So take me in or cut me loose
And whatever I am it feels good just to be
Just to be
So when a woman tells you she's been hurt
You can be radical and just believe her
I won't use big words to tell you what that means
I'll keep it simple, the way you want everything
The way you want everything
The way you want
Cause I'm a woman with a minor refuge
So take me in or cut me loose
And whatever I am it feels good just to be
Just to be
